Well i decided since it was so nice i should start pulling the bulkheads and such out. Anything wood that needs replacing is coming out.
So far ive got the bulkheads an 90% of the covers out. Im going with Red oak based on recommendations from the sail boat owners website. A lot cheaper then sheets of teak. I want to rebuild it and make it nice, not bankrupt me and my project. It has to be affordable but still look nice. Sailing into Newport i wont expect any looks other then "wow, thats a 71? Thats in good shape."
So hopefully this week i can start the measuring and cutting. You will be in for a suprise. I plan on making it a little bit different then stock setup.
Well today was the perfect day to get it done. Went to the home depot and bought 3/4 by 10ft long pieces of pvc for my framework. I didnt want the stress of it on the lifelines so those came off. Harbor freight tarp amd we will see how far into the winter this lasts..lol
I still havw to finish the back.i made it two pieces so i can get in and out without ever loosening up the front portion
Well today was a quiet and nice one after work so i decided to crawl under and check out the work ahead of me. Apparently a keel holder bolt worked its way out on the way home. So i decided to scrap allll the barnicles off. Tough job but made wayyyy easy by using a grout trowel.
Finally, well the day started off with me loading up my friends 2010 tundra with jack, tools, leaf springs hub ect. So exciting im finally bringing her home. Had a nice ride by the canal and down the cape. The weather couldn't have been better. Arrived ready to go. Unloaded all the parts and tools and setup everything. Then it hit me i was missing a leaf spring slip bushing andbolt. Nnnoooooooo... luckily i was able to save one from the trailer. So got her allll done and ready to roll. Itbwas a long day but she is finally home. Soon i will dive into her and start the cleaning process. Here are some pics from today
Well tomorrow is the day. I have to run down to harbor freight tonight for bearing grease and tow light kit. I have the bearings, leafs, bushings, tires and plate. Im so excited to finally get her home. I know i have a lot of work ahead but cant wait to start!!!
Well i made it down today to Wellfleet, man what a drive. 93 miles one way from my house. Went down after i picked up dad. As always mom had a nice little breakfast feast.
We made it down about 10:30. Got the boat and trailer lifted up and tires and hubs removed. The bearings were in pretty good shape. Grease is junk but to be expected. While there i verified the serial number. Good old 442.
On the way back we swung through a federal beach. Absolutely beautiful. Hopefully ill be making my final trip down in a week in a half. To assemble and bring her home
To play it safe im gonna head down to the boat this sunday and take the tires and hubs off. The hubs need new studs and grease the bearings. I also need to borrow tires. The springs are cheap enough. So after sunday ill get what i need and bring my vessel home.gonna try to grab some pictures sunday while im there. Gotta remember to get the hull number too
Well today was a total loss. Went down to pickup my new boat, ended up with a outboard motor, sails and an anchor
I had thought. ya this trailer is plenty big. yup bad assumption it was a foot to narrow. oye wtf. Well after trying to figure how to get it loaded, then unloaded. i decided it couldn't be done today. now the trick is figuring out away to get my baby home.
On a side note i figured out the outboard is a 1988. And part are available so that's a good sign. also its in rough shape but not toooo bad.
Well time to ponder what to do...
Well today is the day i go down and trailer the boat back.ill be taking pictures while setting it all up. Im very excited, while i know Laura(my wife) isnt totally sold. She is still nervous it wont be ready for a long time. I cant wait to start cleaning it out with my daughter. She is excited too. Im not totally sold on the name yet, "Snow Drift".
Ill post more later once im loading the vessel up..
Well i did it,i found the boat.its a 1971 catalina 22 with trailer and a Johnson sailmaster 4 outboard. The price???
A toolbox rollaway with tools that i don't use,win for both of us.the ttailer needs leaf springs, hubs and tires. The boat needs a serious, and i mean serius cleaning. All standing, running rigging is there. Some electrical work is needed and has an extra main, and two extra jibs. i cant wait to get here home. Once i do ill post pictures of the journey.
Seems as if this may not work out as planned. Although an offer on my tools was made. Its about a week out.i think if i do its going to be for next year.nothing for 2013. Weeee will see
Well i got out of work late so i didn't have time for the buyer to come and buy the tools. very frustrating. almost feels like i cant sell these thing. well hopefully he gets back to me today, if not i guess im reporting them and try again.
